Euro 2016: Twitter mocks England after shock 2-1 defeat against Iceland
Underdogs Iceland surprised the world after beating England 2-1 in their round of 16 clash of the UEFA Euro 2016. The Three Lions were put in front by Wayne Rooney’s penalty in the fourth minute after goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson brought down Raheem Sterling. Within no time, Strákarnir okkar equalised as Aron Gunnarsson’s long throw was flicked on by Kari Arnason to Ragnar Sigurdsson who volleyed it into the goal.
Kolbeinn Sigthorsson slotted home the second goal for the underdogs as Joe Hart failed to get his hand to it, in what should have been an easy save.
Roy Hodgson’s tactical experiments were mocked and criticised as Wayne Rooney struggled to influence the game from midfield, while Harry Kane was just abysmal with his set piece deliveries. In the aftermath of the humiliation, Hodgson stepped down from his position. Iceland, who are riding on a dream run in Euro 2016, will now face hosts France in the quarter-final at the Stade de France.
