How Everton and Liverpool rated

Heads up: Steven Gerrard was left frustrated in his last Merseyside Derby

Everton

Joel Robles, 7

Denied Gerrard's brilliant free-kick in opening exchanges with finger-tip save but did not have much to do throughout.

Bryan Oviedo,

Starting only his second match this season, the Costa Rican struggled to contain the effervescent Ibe. Acquired a yellow card for his troubles and contribution attacking-wise was limited.

John Stones, 7

Promising youngster coped ably with pace of Sterling, directness of Sturridge and the alternative dimension offered by Lambert later in the game

Phil Jagielka, 7

Solid defensively to deal with most of what Liverpool offered centrally. Central defensive partnership with Stones could develop into something special.

Seamus Coleman, 7

Marauded down the right channel, posing problems. Solid defensive-wise.

Muhammed Besic, 7

Bosnian shielded Everton's porous backline and frequently interrupted Liverpool's flow. Typically pugnacious, received needless yellow card.

Gareth Barry 4

Should have been subbed mid-way through. Wasteful in possession and slack pressing.

James McCarthy,

Did well, as with Besic, to shield Everton backline and offer invaluable protection to a defensive unit which has shown itself to be porous recently.

Kevin Mirallas, 7

Consistent threat throughout, spearheaded Everton counter-attacks. Decent riposte to recent critics.

Steven Naismith, 6

Posed a threat in and around the final third. Mobile and outstanding work ethic but received foolish booking.

Romelu Lukaku, 8

Harried and bustled Liverpool's defence tracked back regularly throughout. Little action in the box but does not detract from encouraging display.

Subs:

Aaron Lennon, 4

Showed glimpses at times but will come good under Martinez’s tutelage.

Ross Barkley, 4

Hardly any time to impose himself, on for five minutes. Will be hoping to start at Chelsea in mid-week.

Antolin Alcaraz,

Came on with four minutes to go merely to consolidate a point for Everton with Besic carrying the threat of yellow card with Chelsea Everton’s next opponents.

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet, 6

The Belgian was rarely tested in a drab stalemate. Was hesitant at times but a solid performance overall.

Alberto Moreno, 7

Marauded forward with frequency to contribute to Liverpool's attacks. Provided an attacking outlet on the left channel.

Martin Skrtel, 7

Managed the threat posed by Lukaku relatively well. Limited Everton’s goal-scoring chances. Solid.

Mamadou Sakho, 7

Equally solid in containing Lukaku.

Emre Can, 7

Fared well in containing the threat posed by Oviedo and Mirallas. Establishing himself as a regular in recent weeks.

Steven Gerrard, 5

Saw 10th-minute free-kick effort acrobatically turned over by Joel. Biggest cheer of first-half came when he whizzed a ball woefully into the Gwlayds Street End. Was largely frustrated and restricted by Besic and McCarthy in his last Merseyside Derby.

Lucas Leiva,

Inclusion in starling-line was surprising but pulled up after 19 minutes. Will undergo a scan.

Jordan Ibe, 9

Recently recalled on loan from Derby County, posed a serious threat on the right channel. Swerving strike from range crashed against the crossbar in the first half. Very promising.

Jordan Henderson, 5

Failed to make the impact he would have hoped to. Acquired foolish booking for altercation with Naismith.

Phillipe Coutinho, 5

Brazilian failed to repeat his heroic feats in the FA Cup in mid-week. Restricted effectively by Besic and McCarthy.

Raheem Sterling, 5

Failed to impose himself on the match as much as he would have liked. On the fringes.

Subs:

Joe Allen, 6

Successfully shielded Liverpool’s defensive with little-attacking contribution. Decent display, nonetheless.

Daniel Sturridge, 4

Little impact, after he came on at half-time through service to England striker, was relatively limited.

Rickie Lambert, 4

On for eight minutes, having replaced Sterling. Little time to make an impact. Forced Joel into respectable save.
