Everton holds talks with Martinez but maintains there are others on the list
With David Moyes making the big move to Manchester United, the managerial position at Everton lies vacant. Everton chairperson Bill Kenwright has admitted that there is no particular favourite to replace David Moyes. But nevertheless, Bill has opened talks with Roberto Martínez about the possibility of taking the reigns at the club. The Everton chairman met the Wigan Athletic manager in London on 29th May after Martinez had informed Wigan owner Dave Whelan that he intends to put an end to his time with the club, thus clearing the path for a move to Goodison Park.
Martinez has earlier rejected Aston Villa in 2011 and Liverpool in 2012, but his apparent interest in Kenwright’s offer is quite surprising considering his previous unwavering stand.
Everton, on their part, has weighed all the options ever since Moyes has left to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and have left no stone unturned to find a suitable replacement.
Everton has said that they are even willing to pay £2 million for Martinez’s release from his Wigan contract.
When asked whether Neil Lennon, Malky Mackay or Michael Laudrup remain in the running, Kenwright said: “There is a list. No favourite – not at this moment.”
