EPL 2016-17: Everton v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, live telecast, team news, prediction, and betting odds

Everton host Spurs at the Goodison on opening day

Ronald Koeman’s first competitive game in charge sees Tottenham travelling to the Goodison. Spurs fans will be disappointed with the way their side collapsed late on in the 2015/16 campaign, but they will be looking forward to the prospect of Champions League football. Armed with the signings of Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama, Spurs will be looking to get their campaign off to a quick start.

For Everton this will be a fresh start under a new manager. Ronald Koeman will be looking to rebuild a side that is lacking defensively. With the departure of John Stones, Koeman has roped in Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, but the Welshman will not be available for the season opener. With injuries to Lukaku and Coleman, Everton have been handed a difficult start in a season where they are hoping to improve on their 11th placed finish from last year.

Everton vs Tottenham team news:

Everton have lost John Stones to Manchester City and new signing Ashley Williams will be unavailable after a late start to preseason training. Ronald Koeman has stated that the Welshman is not ready and that the entire squad is just 70% fit.

Chelsea target Romelu Lukaku and full-back Seamus Coleman are both doubts with heel and ankle problems respectively. Everton though will be boosted by the fact that skipper Phil Jagielka has overcome his hamstring problem and is available to start. New recruits Maarten Stekelenburg and Idrissa Gueye are set to be handed their Everton debuts.

For Spurs, Moussa Dembele remains suspended after a clash with Diego Costa last season. This means Victor Wanyama is in line to make his Spurs debut. Centre-back Jan Vertonghen has recovered from an ankle injury sustained during the Euro 2016 and is in contention for a start. Forward Vincent Janssen is also available following his move from Alkmaar and could start from the bench.

Prediction

Everton have not won any of their last 7 meetings against Spurs and that is not expected to change. After a disappointing pre-season campaign, the Toffees will not be high on confidence.  With Lukaku and Coleman both doubts for the game, Koeman will have to turn to the likes of Kone and Oviedo if the duo are unable to make it.

Spurs, on the other hand are almost fully fit and high on confidence on the back of a 6-1 win. Harry Kane will be desperate to find some form after a disappointing Euro 2016 campaign and will be looking to score his 50th Premier League goal.

The fact remains though that the Goodison Park is an extremely difficult place to visit, especially on opening day.

We go with a score draw. (1-1 or 2-2)
