Everton vs Southampton Prediction and Betting Tips | September 17th 2024

Everton will invite Southampton to Goodison Park in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday. Both teams have suffered losses in their first four games of the Premier League campaign and their only wins this term were registered in the Carabao Cup second round in August.

The hosts fell to a 3-2 away loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, giving away a two-goal lead. In their first league game after the international break, first-half goals from Dwight McNeil and Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped them take a comfortable lead but Villa registered a remarkable comeback, scoring twice in the second half.

The visitors played Manchester United at home last week and suffered a 3-0 loss, as they conceded twice in the first half. They failed to score for the third time in four league games.

Everton vs Southampton Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • The two teams will meet for the 110th time in competitive games. The Toffees have a clear upper hand in these meetings with 52 wins. The Saints have got the better of their northern rivals 34 times and 23 games have ended in draws.
  • They have met just twice in the Carabao Cup, with the visitors winning both games. They registered a 2-1 win in the 1971 second round and won the 2018 third-round meeting on penalties.
  • Everton have won four of their last five games in the Carabao Cup, with their only defeat in that period coming on penalties.
  • Southampton, meanwhile, have lost three of their last four games in the competition.
  • The last six meetings between them have produced conclusive results, with three wins for either side.
  • The Saints have conceded three goals apiece in their last three games in all competitions.

Everton vs Southampton Prediction

The Toffees have suffered back-to-back 3-2 losses, giving away two-goal leads in both, and will look to improve upon that performance. They have scored seven goals in their last three games in all competitions and will look to continue their goalscoring run here.

Sean Dyche has a few injury concerns for this match as Jarrad Branthwaite, Nathan Patterson, Youssef Chermit, Armando Broja, and Séamus Coleman remain sidelined. Vitalii Mykolenko was subbed off early against Aston Villa and is unlikely to start here.

The Saints have lost four of their five games this season, with their only win coming in an away game in the Carabao Cup against Cardiff City last month. They have conceded three goals apiece in their last three games, which is a cause for concern.

Russell Martin did not include Will Smallbone in the squad against Manchester United due to an injury and the midfielder is a doubt for this match as well.

While both teams have been in poor touch recently, considering the home advantage for Everton and the visitors' poor defensive form, we back the Toffees to eke out a narrow win.

Prediction: Everton 2-1 Southampton
