I will give everything to win Bundesliga with my hometown club again: Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus
Marco Reus, who signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund, has set his sight on winning the Bundesliga with his hometown club. The German attacker was heavily linked with a move away from Dortmund prior to penning the new contract.
The midfielder said to a German magazine, “That remains a major goal for me. I want to experience once more what happened in the city then.
“I will give everything for that, and I have a strong feeling that it can happen one day.”
Dortmund won back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012 prior to Reus’ arrival at the club from Borussia Mönchengladbach for € 17 million, in the summer of 2012.
Reus refused to walk on the lines of ex-team-mates Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze, who have been lured away by current German champions Bayern Munich. The 25-year-old decided to stay at Dortmund, despite the club being currently set to fight a relegation battle after an awful start to the season.
Reus’ current contract ties him to Dortmund till 2019 which remains valid even if Dortmund gets relegated this season. However, the deal is supposedly worth €10 million a year – a club record.
But most importantly, Reus’ new deal scraps his €25 million buy-out-clause mentioned in his previous contract.
Have friends and family in Dortmund: Reus
Throughout the uncertainty involving his new deal, Reus refused comment. He also praised his current employers for their “business-like” attitude to securing him on a long-term deal despite the club's problems last year.
He said, “Here, nobody is wandering around and has made statements which point in the wrong direction. The calmness which has emanated inside and outside at Dortmund during the crisis, shows the strength of the club.
“I made this decision because Borussia is best for me. Dortmund is my home town, my family lives here and I have my friends here.
“And by the way, there's still life after football.”
