FIFA standings and rules - Apr 2014 update
FIFA standings of top – 20 teams as on 10 Apr, 2014.
FIFA standings for the teams in 2014 are decided on various factors:
- Points are calculated on adding the sum of past 4 year points tally:
- 2011- 20% Weightage
- 2012- 30% Weightage
- 2013- 50% Weightage
- 2014- 100% Weightage
- Points from each match are calculated based on 3 parameters:
Result (M): Draw, Win or Loss
M= 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and no point for a defeat. In a penalty shoot-out, the winning team gets 2 points while the losing team gets 1 point.
Importance (I) of the match: Friendly to FIFA World Cup match
I= Friendly match plus small competitions gets a team a total of 1 point. A FIFA World Cup qualifier or confederation-level qualifier earns team, 2.5 points. Confederation-level final competition or FIFA Confederations Cup gets the team 3 points. For each match in a World Cup final competition, a team gets 4 points.
Opposition (T and C): Ranking position of the team (T) plus confederation they belong (C)
T= Ranking of each team; the top team gets a score of 200, while a minimum score of 50 is given to every team having a rank greater than or equal to 150.
C= Points allocated to confederation are as such:
- UEFA and CONMEBOL= 1
- CONCACAF= 0.88
- AFC and CAF= 0.86
- OFC= 0.85
