Five Serie A players banned for their involvement in match fixing
Five players including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri have been banned for different time periods for their involvement in match fixing by the Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary commission.
The players who have been handed the penalty include Stefano Mauri and Stefano Ferrario(6 months), Carlo Gervasoni(2 months), Mario Cassano (4 months) and Alessandro Zamperini (two years), while Omar Milanetto, Massimiliano Benassi and Antonio Rosati have been cleared of any offence.
After investigations, it was confirmed that the results of Lazio-Genoa from May 14, 2011 and Lecce-Lazio, from May 22, 2011 were fixed.
It was expected that Lazio, Genoa and Lecce would be handed points deduction going into the 2013-14 campaign as FIGC prosecutor Stefano Palazzi had demanded it.
But no such deductions were imposed on clubs while Lazio alone was fined €40,000, according to Football Italia.
