German national team physio Klaus Eder became the hero of an ironic story after he injured himself twice while running on to the pitch on Friday to tend to defender Marcel Schmelzer in Germany’s World Cup qualifier against Austria.

While running on to the pitch, Eder tore a muscle in his left leg which caused him to fall over and break his left ring finger.

Eder, who will be celebrating his 25th year on the job by rehabbing his own body, continued to treat Schmelzer despite the injuries.

“I now have to put into practice what I always tell my patients. One should not underestimate the effect of adrenaline,” told the national team’s official website.

Eder was carried out of the pitch by Mesut Ozil and Miroslav Klose while Philip Lahm brought him an ice pack for his finger. He will now undergo surgery on his broken finger and will be back in the job after the surgery.
