Football pays tribute to Phil Hughes
The tragic demise of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes has not only shocked the cricket world but also brought sports teams and lovers all over the globe together. While cricketers past and present presented glowing tributes to the late southpaw, football also did its bit in saluting him. British clubs Arsenal, Reading, Cardiff City and Brighton & Hove Albion participated in the #putoutyourbats social media campaign.
Australian football league sent condolences to Hughes’ family, bowler Sean Abbott and Cricket Australia.
Retired footballers David Beckham and Phil Neville also took to social media to mourn the loss, and so did Real madrid superstar Gareth Bale.
Moreover, a football matches in the A-League will observe a minute’s silence before kickoff in all the matches on the weekend. This has already been followed in the clash between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory with fans applauding in the 63rd minute and chanting “Hughesy” before unfurling a “RIP Phil Hughes” banner.
