Footballer Prasun Banerjee conferred 'Shan-E-Mohammedan'

Kolkata, July 4 (IANS) Historic city football club Mohammedan Sporting on Monday bestowed the honour of 'Shan-E-Mohammedan' to former defensive midfielder Prasun Banerjee.

The prolific player once graced the maidan with his stupendous footballing skills and was a household name in the 1970 and 80s. He is also the brother of legendary footballer P.K Banerjee.

He had represented India at the Asian Games thrice and also captained the national team on a number of occasions.

Banerjee was a talismanic Mohun Bagan footballer who later donned the black and white Mohammedan jersey. He is presently a Trinamool Congress MP.

"I have received the Arjuna Award before, but this is very special too," Banerjee told reporters here.

He was only the second Indian to play for the Asian All Star XI and had played two matches against the likes of Brazil legends Zico and Socrates.

Banerjee was given the award at the 'Iftar' celebrations at the Khudiram Anusilan Kendra where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former India captain Sourav Ganguly and club president Sultan Ahmed were present.
