Former European Champions Steaua Bucharest left without name or logo after court ruling
Steaua Bucharest, a club once known for conquering the great European Cup in 1986, are now without a name, colour or emblem as they have been stripped of their identity by Romania's Supreme Court. The Romanian club played in yellow instead of their iconic red and blue and played under the name of hosts as the word Steaua was not mentioned at all.
The Romanian champions were taken to court back in 2011 for having used the brand ‘Steaua’ illegally, and their registration for the name was made null and void after a court hearing on Wednesday.
Despite all the hoopla surrounding the controversy, ‘Hosts’ emerged as winners over Iasi as centre back Lukasz Szukala scored the winning goal in the dying moments, extending their run of matches with clean sheets to five league matches.
The name was however effective immediately removed from almost every training or official kit and were referred to as Hosts even on the scoreboard while their emblem was replaced with a big black box.
The court has however allowed them to use the name and logo this week as they taken on Dynamo Kiev in a Europa league match.
Bucharest are known for their famous unbeaten run from 1986 to 1989 when they went on to win three consecutive league titles, unbeaten all the way for 104 matches.
