Ex- United coach Mike Phelan is in the frame to replace Owen Coyle as the next manager of Wigan.Owen Coyle left by mutual agreement following three successive deafeats at home which left Wigan reeling in 14th place in the Championship

Phelan was linked with the Wigan job earlier in the summer when Roberto Martinez left the club following the FA cup win over Manchester City. However, Chairman Dave Whelan decided to opt for the former Bolton manager.

Despite the lack of top level management, Phelan is seen as an ideal candidate for the Wigan job due to an impressive resume during his time at Manchester United when he helped the Red Devils win 3 Premier League titles, 2 League Cups, a World Club Cup and reach two Champions League finals.

Mike Phelan and Ian Holloway are the current favourites to take up the vacancy at the Lactics. Holloway led Crystal Palace to Premier League this season but resigned in October.

Meanwhile, Dave Whelan came out saying that he did not sack Owen Coyle and that Coyle left following a mutual agreement with the club.

The Lactics owner said,“Owen said did I want him to resign. I said ‘yes’.”
