Friendly Match Review: Netherlands 3 - 4 USA
USA shocked the footballing world on the Friday night when they managed to come back from a 2 goals deficit to beat Netherlands in a friendly held in Amsterdam. The final scoreline was 3-4 to the USA. Having met five times before, this is the first time that USA has managed to beat the Oranje.
USA youngster Bobby Wood settled the match in favour of USA when he scored in the 90th minute.
Earlier in the match, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar nodded home a powerful header from a beautiful cross by Manchester United’s new signing, Memphis Depay. USA replied just after 6 minutes through Gyasi Zardes who escaped Janmaat and tapped in the equalizer for the USA.
Huntelaar made it 2-1 just after the break with another beautiful header from a cross by PSG right back Van der Wiel. Huntelaar's goals raised his total to 41 in 72 international matches, moving one ahead of Patrick Kluivert for second place on the Dutch scoring list.Netherlands captain Robin van Persie, who leads with 49, could not put the ball past goalkeeper Guzan and saw one back-heeled attempt cleared off the line by Kyle Beckerman.
Huntelaar played a major role in the 3rd goal as well where his powerful shot was accidentally deflected in by Memphis Depay.
Incredible comeback
With the hosts 3-1 ahead in the 70th minute, John Brooks started the comeback with tap in from a beautiful counter-attacking move involving Bradley and Yedlin.
And then in the 89th minute USA managed to equalize through Danny Williams whose scorching drive just outside box, took a fortunate deflection and went in.
The comeback was complete when Bobby Wood managed to strike in a low cross from Jordan Morris. The move was a carbon copy of the second American goal.
Americans will now play World Cup winners Germany next week in their next-to-last game before starting the defense of their CONCACAF Gold Cup title.
Missing key players
The U.S. was missing three key players. Captain Clint Dempsey stayed in Seattle to await the birth of his fourth child, fellow attacker Jozy Altidore is recovering from a hamstring injury and midfielder Alejandro Bedoya was out with a knee injury and watched from the stands.
Netherlands was without Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben, whose season was ended by a calf injury. The Dutch play a European Championship qualifier at Latvia next Friday and are third in Group A after five matches.
