Froster heading back to England to salvage career
In a last ditch effort to save his international career, Fraser Forster, the Celtic goalkeeper, is heading back to England.
During his stay with club, he had expressed a desire to go back to his native North East. Forster, a Wallsend Boys’ Club graduate, came up through the ranks, fighting tooth and nail to establish himself in Roy Hodgson’s England set-up last season, but got unfortunately sidelined for the upcoming games against Brazil and the Republic of Ireland.
Given the circumstances, the 6’7 tall keeper is looking to jump ship to the Premier League.
He has always been forthcoming of the fact that he is a Newcastle aficionado and has nothing but immense admiration for the club that sold him for £2m to Celtic last summer.
Forster, a former Newcastle United player, picked up his fourth winners’ medal in three years after helping Celtic win the Scottish Cup on Sunday and round up a domestic double.
Forster said: “It’s a tough one. Celtic have been fantastic for me and this season couldn’t have gone much better, both personally and as a team.
“But it’s disappointing not to be in this England squad.”
“I’ve got to be looking towards the World Cup next year and trying to be on that plane. So I’ll just have to do whatever is necessary to make that squad.”
When asked about why he thought he was benched, he replied thus, “I didn’t get an explanation as to why I was left out this time although I haven’t spoken to anyone at England. It’s just one of those things.”
“Was it a body-blow not to be in the squad? Well, yes. That’s where you want to be.”
“Having had a taste of being in an England squad before and after Christmas, that’s what you’re aiming for. Once you’ve been in, you want to be in every time.”
Given the player’s impressive performances up north, both in the domestic games and the Champions League, it is not a surprise that many heavy weight clubs, including Everton, are chasing his tail.
He made his Newcastle debut in 2006 but soon moved away as he didn’t get many opportunities to flaunt his game in the first team.
Forster has assured fans that he will not give up on his dream of representing the Toons, no matter where he is destined to end up.
