Gennaro Gattuso named the new Palermo manager

Palermo has named former Italy and AC Milan midfielder, Gennaro Gattuso as the team’s manager and assigned him a task of guiding the degraded team back to Serie A, the club announced on Wednesday.

An one-year-contract has been signed with the 35-year-old, who won a host of honours including two Champions League crowns and the 2006 World Cup as a player.

“Palermo has entrusted Gennaro Gattuso with the charge of leading the Rosanero’s first team,” Palermo said on their official website.

Gattuso had an unsuccessful stint as a player and coach for Sion, comes in the place Giuseppe Sannino who failed to stop Palermo from being degraded to Serie B.

Christian Constantin took the reigns of Sion for the second time in 2002 and had appointed over 30 managers and sacked 5 in the previous season. Meanwhile, Palermo’s president Maurizio Zamparini also known as “manager eater” is famous for his hiring and firing of managers.

Coaches were also not sparred by Zampirini as he sacked around 25 coaches and some of the unfortunate lot had been fired more than once.

Three different coaches were used by him in the last season, two of them twice. Gian Piero Gasperinni was fired by Zampirini, got replaced by Alberto Malesani for 3 games and made a comeback before being fired after two matches.

He eventually returned to Sannino, who started the season as manager but was sacked after three matches. Sannino left at the end of the season after failing to save the club from relegation despite some good displays in the closing weeks of the season.
