The World Cup winners dropped points yet again failing to hold on to their one goal lead as John O’ Shea, who won his 100th cap for Ireland, scored a stoppage-time equaliser to deny a victory for Joachim Low’s men.
Fresh from a surprising 2-0 defeat against Poland last Saturday, the Germans made a slow start at the Gelsenkirchen, putting on a lacklustre display in the first half. The end product was missing from the attackers despite Ireland spending most of the time in their own half.
That changed though in the second half after Toni Kroos pulled out a spectacular low strike in the 71st st minute that hit the post and went in.
The Real Madrid midfielder’s goal seemed to be enough to give the pre-match favourites a victory, but O’Shea denied the hosts in the dying minutes as he directed the ball low into the bottom-right corner and send the travelling support into raptures.
Ireland have seven points from three games now and are joint group toppers with Poland. Germany are three points behind them and sit in third place.
