Goa Pro League football player commits suicideĀ

Football
The ugly side of Football

What's the story?

In a sad turn of events, Sporting Clube de Goa player Avaristho Fernandes is said to have ended his own life after a New Year's party.

In case you didn't know...

Avaristho was an Under-15 player for the Goan side. Then, he decided to join the SESA Football Academy for three years and then represented the Sporting Club de Goa again but at the Under-20 level this time around. After some impressive performances, he was promoted to the senior side and was marked as a key player for the upcoming season.

The heart of the matter

According to some reports, the 21-year old came back to his home from a New Year's party in early morning after celebrating with his teammates and friends. Reportedly, nothing suspicious happened at the party. He didn't open the door of his room the next morning which caused panic.

There was no suicide note in the room and the reasons for death are best known to the deceased. Allegedly, a window had to be broken to take the deceased's body out of the room. It is a suspected case of suicide with no proofs till now about external interference in the room.

What next?

Investigations are still going on and hopefully, the police will find the cause of death in the near future with no delay.

Sportskeeda's take

This is a very sad moment for Indian football. It is often said that Indian sportspersons are underpaid and badly behaved with by the authorities. The mind certainly goes back to May 2015 when four teenage athletes were forced to attempt suicide due to a minor issue.

Obviously, the one case that still doesn't let some Indian football fans sleep is the suicide by former Indian football captain and national selector at the time of death, VP Sathyan by jumping in front of a train in 2006 due to financial reasons.

The condition of Indian sports should be improved at the grassroots level to avoid such incidents.
