Goal Line Technology used in World Cup for first time to award France's second goal against Honduras
Goal Line Technology came to the rescue for the first time in the 2014 World Cup when France played Honduras in their Group E opener.
France won the game 3-0 and Karim Benzema was denied a hat-trick only because the second goal was counted as an own goal.
Running into the box on the left side, Benzema latched onto a cross and just about managed to take a shot on goal with his left foot past the stranded Honduras goalkeeper.
However, the ball cannoned off the post and came back towards the other post where the goalkeeper tried to hold on to the ball but ended up spilling it over the line.
The digital scoreboards around the stadium initially said it wasn’t a goal but that was only for the first instance when it hit the post. But on the second instance, it did cross the line and the goal was awarded to France.
The commentator also added to the confusion by stating that it was a controversial goal in spite of the ball clearly crossing the line. The Honduras players and staff also expressed their displeasure after the goal was awarded but it was the correct call.
