A double strike from Brazilian midfielder Hernanes helped Lazio go top of Italy’s Serie A thanks to a 3-1 away victory at Chievo on Sunday.

Lazio were one of only four teams to win their first two league games and they maintained their 100 percent record to go top of the table on nine points ahead of the rest of the league programme later on Sunday.

Hernanes gave Vladimir Petkovic’s side some breathing space when he opened the scoring at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi after just five minutes.

German international Miroslav Klose put the Biancocelesti 2-0 up seven minutes before half-time and Hernanes made it three when he scored his second with just over a quarter of an hour to play.

Chievo grabbed a consolation goal with seven minutes remaining when Sergio Pellissier scored from the penalty spot. They remain in mid-table.

Overnight leaders Juventus will aim to regain top spot away at Genoa later on Sunday, while Napoli, who started second, are at home to Parma.

Sampdoria, who also won their first two games, are away at Pescara.

Sunday’s late match sees promoted Torino host Inter Milan, who lost 3-1 at home to Roma in their last match before the international break.
