He’s not Baines: Manchester United ponder £20m bid for thunderous left-back
The Telegraph report that Manchester United have joined the race for Southampton left back Luke Shaw. The 18-year-old has long been linked with a move to Chelsea, but reports suggest that David Moyes will attempt to hijack the move with a £20 million bid of his own.
Moyes has been linked with a raid on former club Everton for Leighton Baines, as he steps up his attempts to find a long term successor for Patrice Evra. However with Toffees boss Roberto Martinez standing firm in the face of interest in Baines Moyes appears to have moved onto new targets, with Shaw top of his list.
Shaw has made 16 appearances for Southampton this season, following on from 25 appearances last season. Long viewed as the successor to Ashley Cole at Chelsea, Shaw is still only 18 years of age and has made three appearances for England Under 21’s.
Southampton have previously insisted that they will not be selling Shaw, but with reports suggesting that Moyes could bid £20 million for the youngster their resolve could be tested.
Should United be unsuccessful in their pursuit of Shaw, then rumours suggest that they may turn their attentions to Real Madrid left back Marcelo.
