Highlights: Chelsea return to winning ways with 2-0 victory against Newcastle United

Diego Costa celebrates scoring Chelsea’s second goal with Oscar in their 2-0 win against Newcastle

Chelsea regained a two point lead at the top of the Premier League table over Manchester City, as goals from Oscar and Diego Costa gave the Blues a 2-0 victory over 10th placed Newcastle United. This was the 10th straight win at home territory for Jose Mourinho’s men, who have not dropped any points at Stamford Bridge this season yet. After making news for some wrong reasons in the recent past, these three points will come as a blessing for Chelsea.

Newcastle United took the game to the opposition in the initial phases of the match, with exciting French youngster Remy Cabella given a start under caretaker-manager John Carver. Cabella’s shots required stand-in goalkeeper Petr Cech to be on his toes throughout the first half, and it was the right post which came to Chelsea’s rescue to keep out a Mousa Sissoko shot in the 36th minute.

With two minutes left in the half, Chelsea caught out the Newcastle defence with a quickly taken corner by Willian, and Oscar slotted in a goal to give his team the lead completely against the run of play.

Chelsea had more control of the game in the second half, and Diego Costa scored his 15th league goal of the season at the end of a brilliant team move involving Eden Hazard and Oscar in the 59th minute.

Nemanja Matic and Oscar picked up yellow cards in the second half as the London club bullishly held on to their lead, which will be small collateral damage if this win sees them embark on another record winning streak.
