Highlights: Sevilla defeat Dnipro 3-2 to clinch record-breaking 4th Europa League
Sevilla created history last night when they defeated Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 3-2 to win the Europa League for the 4th time. They also successfully defended their title that they won last year, making it the second time that they have achieved this feat (They did it in 2006 and 2007 too)
They had to come from behind in an exciting match against their Ukranian opponents and had a Carlos Bacca winner to thank for their victory. Dnipro started the match on the front foot and were sharp on the counter, taking the lead in as early as the 7th minute through Nikola Kalinic.
Sevilla looked to hit back soon after and got a chance when Reyes took a shot on goal from a quickly taken free-kick, but his effort was saved. From the resulting corner, a well-worked move found the ball reaching Carlos Bacca, who layed it off to midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak, who sent a controlled shot into the goal, drawing Sevilla level.
The Spanish team then took the lead in the 31st minute through Bacca, who rounded the goalkeeper and finished calmly to make it 2-1. Dnipro though, were in no mood to give up, and made the scores 2-2 right on the stroke of half-time, when captain Rotan scored from a beautiful free-kick, which had the beating of Sevilla goalkeeper Rico.
The winner for the Andalusians was scored by who else, but that man Bacca, in the 73rd minute as he ran on to a through ball and finished with aplomb past the Dnipro goalkeeper. This win saw a team defending their Europa League crown for the first time since the format was changed in 2009, and also was the first time a Ukranian team had lost in the finals.
This win also sealed a historic achievement, which will see 5 Spanish teams in the Champions League next season, as Sevilla join Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia in the competition.
