Manchester United have more homegrown players in squad than Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal

The Premier League Trophy

The home-grown players rule in the English Premier League is often misunderstood. It has been commonly misconstrued as needing to have a certain number of young British players in the squad when in reality it has nothing to do with nationality or age.

According to the Official website, the following is the rule for home-grown players.

A home-grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

The rule states that there should be 8 home-grown players in a squad of 25 meaning there can be no more than 17 foreign players.

  • The loophole to this rule is naming a squad with a strength of less than 25 (17 foreign players +  no. of home grown players) which Chelsea and Tottenham have done.
  • Promoted side Burnley have the highest (19) while Chelsea have the least (3).
