How would the I-League table look like if only goals from Indian players are counted?
Almost a month has passed since the 2013-14 I-League campaign concluded and Sportskeeda has conducted a unique study to form an alternative table. Here is how the the I-League table would have looked like if only goals from Indian players were taken into consideration.
For example the Kolkata derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan back in March finished 1-1 but in our study the scoreline would be a 1-0 victory for Mohun Bagan as their goal scorer was Indian CS Sabeeth while South Sudan international James Moga got on the scoresheet for East Bengal.
Bengaluru FC would be the champions even in this alternative table but Churchill Brothers, who only avoided relegation by winning on the last day of the season, would be runners-up. Mohammedan Sporting would have survived in this table as they would finish second-from-bottom with United Sports Club getting relegated instead.
The team with the better head-to-head results (only counting Indian scorers) has been placed higher in case two sides finished level on points
Team | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | GF | GA | GD | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bengaluru FC | 24 | 11 | 10 | 3 | 26 | 12 | +14 | 43 |
Churchill Brothers | 24 | 8 | 12 | 4 | 19 | 14 | +5 | 36 |
East Bengal | 24 | 9 | 9 | 6 | 18 | 12 | +6 | 36 |
Dempo | 24 | 7 | 12 | 5 | 12 | 11 | +1 | 33 |
Sporting Clube | 24 | 7 | 11 | 6 | 15 | 13 | +2 | 32 |
Mumbai FC | 24 | 6 | 13 | 5 | 14 | 13 | +1 | 31 |
Shillong Lajong | 24 | 7 | 10 | 7 | 13 | 11 | +2 | 31 |
Salgaocar | 24 | 6 | 11 | 7 | 14 | 15 | -1 | 29 |
Mohun Bagan | 24 | 6 | 10 | 8 | 10 | 13 | -3 | 28 |
Rangdajied United | 24 | 6 | 9 | 9 | 14 | 17 | -3 | 27 |
Pune FC | 24 | 3 | 17 | 4 | 11 | 14 | -3 | 26 |
Mohammedan Sporting | 24 | 2 | 15 | 7 | 5 | 13 | -8 | 21 |
United SC | 24 | 3 | 11 | 10 | 6 | 18 | -12 | 20 |
Bengaluru’s performance in this table shows that they were not overdependent on foreigners as they also comfortably finished with the best goals for tally and goal difference. Meanwhile Dempo and Shillong Lajong would have the best defensive record in this alternative table. Salgaocar would be the worst affected as they would be eighth whereas in reality the Goan outfit were third. The bottom two – United SC and Mohammedan Sporting – couldn’t even reach double figures in the goals for column.
