I feel guilty, says Antoine Greizmann about Atletico Madrid crashing out of Champions League courtesy Cristiano's hat-trick
What's the story?
Atletico Madrid star, Antoine Griezmann, has admitted that he feels guilty after a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick led to Juventus' win, knocking out Atletico from the UEFA Champions League.
In case you didn't know...
Atletico Madrid failed to take advantage of their 2-0 lead from the first leg as they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Juventus.
Goals from Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez helped Atletico secure a comfortable lead at the Wanda Metropolitano, but Cristiano Ronaldo's heroics in the second leg saw them crashing out from the tournament.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored his 8th hat-trick in the Champions League, which took Ronaldo's tally to 124 goals in the competition. The Portuguese talisman now has 63 goals in the knockout phases of the competition.
Atletico Madrid is also one of Cristiano Ronaldo's favourite victims, as he has managed to put 25 goals past them over the years.
The Spanish side failed to register even a single shot on target throughout the match and were deservedly knocked out from the competition.
The heart of the matter
After Juventus' 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid last night, Griezmann lamented his team's performance against the Bianconeri.
“We did not enter the game, we knew it was going to be difficult and we chose a bad day to screw it up,” Griezmann told Movistar as quoted by Fox Sports.
“Everyone is f****ed up and I feel guilty, because I could not keep up with the pace of the game.”
Speaking about Cristiano Ronaldo and his majestic hat-trick, Griezmann said,
“Cristiano has taken the measure to the whole world because he is a great player. In the first leg we managed to give him no chances and today he had three and all three went in.”
“I do not know what to say to the fans. We’re screwed”
What's next?
Atletico Madrid are now only alive in LaLiga, as they have been knocked out from the Copa del Rey and Champions League this season.
They will face Bilbao next in LaLiga.
