Despite being deprived of a lead due to a VAR decision, two goals from defensive duo Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin in the second half helped the Spanish outfit to a crucial advantage in the fixture.

The defeat serves as a big blow to Juventus, who bought Ronaldo mainly to lead them to European glory, as the Bianconeri are accustomed to the league title, having won the Serie A seven successive times and on their way to winning an eighth this year.

The heart of the matter

Ronaldo's first return to Madrid since his summer move proved to be a night to forget but the five-time Ballon d'Or winner made sure the capital did not forget what he has achieved.

After the game, the 34-year-old was seen gesturing at the Atletico fans putting up five fingers to indicate how many times he's won Europe's elite competition.

According to Goal, when walking through the mixed zone, Ronaldo said, "I have five Champions Leagues, you [Atletico] have none."

The former Blancos star won the Champions League title with Manchester United in 2008 followed by four of the same during his time with Real Madrid.

What's next?

Following the crucial defeat, Juventus will turn to the Serie A where they will hope to maintain their lead when they face Bologna on Sunday.
