I-League 2017/18: Mohun Bagan eyeing Penn Orji as Sony Norde replacement
What’s the story?
Sony Norde, the heartthrob of Mohun Bagan fans, left for Argentina, where he is set to undergo an operation to cure his injured ankle. Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan officials have found his replacement in form of former Kerala Blasters man Penn Orji, according to sources.
In case you didn't know...
Orji has a lot of experience in Indian football, having played for East Bengal, JCT, Mohammedan Sporting and Shillong Lajong in the I-League and for Kerala Blasters in ISL. His pace and skill was always the topic of discussion and his ability to score despite being a midfielder made him special.
The heart of the matter
Bagan are said to be looking for just a three-month deal for the Nigerian, for now. Orjji is likely to join the Mariners after their match against Aizawl FC on Thursday. Apart from the seven games in I-League, he will don the Bagan colours in the Super Cup too. He is currently playing at a US-based club.
It is almost impossible to find a replacement for Sony Norde, but Orji could add value to the side. His pace and through passing ability can give more chances to players like Dipanda Dicka, Akram Moghrabi.
The Mariners would be looking to get their title challenge back on track after beating arch-rivals East Bengal 2-0 in the Derby. With Orji in their ranks, the title race in the I-League could come alive once again.
What’s next?
Mohun Bagan need to win almost all their remaining games to give themselves a chance of winning the I-League. The way they played in the derby spoke a lot about the character of the team. It goes without saying that Orji will be a key factor for them.
Author’s take
Penn Orji has a proven track record in India, and if he can showcase the same form and class, Mohun Bagan will surely present some eye-catching football.
