I-League 2017: Yuta Kinowaki, Azharuddin Mallick doubtful for East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan game
What's the story?
The hotly-contested Kolkata Derby is all set for a return this weekend as arch-rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal look poised to lock horns yet again in the I-League.
Mohun Bagan have been preparing for this match with all their heart, but it appears that they could be without their two key players -- Yuta Kinowaki and Azharuddin Mallick for the monumental game.
In case you didn't know...
Mohun Bagan bought big and acquired the services of Japanese star Yuta Kinowaki this season after the midfielder's successful run with Aizawl FC. Mallick, on the other hand, was instrumental when Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal 2-1 earlier this year, scoring a brilliant lobbed goal and securing a win for the Mariners.
The heart of the matter
The two players have been suffering from injuries for some time, but are said to be on the verge of recovering. However, sources close to the club believe that they have not fully recovered as of yet, and are doubtful for the game.
The injuries to Kinowaki and Mallick are especially harsh on Mohun Bagan as the club haven't been able to get a single game out of the duo since the start of this season's I-League.
Kinowaki has been suffering from an ongoing groin problem since he joined the club from Shillong Lajong but was widely tipped to make it back in time for the encounter against East Bengal.
What's next?
The clash on Sunday is expected to sell out the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata despite stiff competition from the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL).
Author's take
This season's I-League promises some major surprises. If last season is anything to go by and the Kolkata Derby could once again prove to be a major factor in the league's proceedings.
