I-League 2nd Division: Mohammedan Sporting issue show-cause notice to 2-time ISL winner Fikru Teferra
What's the Story?
He may have been an absolute hero for Atletico de Kolkata and Chennaiyin FC in their first two seasons of the Indian Super League in 2014 and 2015, but striker Fikru Teferra is now struggling to keep his spot even in the lower divisions of Indian football.
Mohammedan Sporting, who are currently playing in the I-League 2nd Division, have now show-caused the Ethiopian striker.
In case you didn't know...
Mohammedan Sporting seem to be in a mid-season overhaul at the moment after the club management decided to part ways with former head coach Biswait Bhattacharya and ex-goalkeeping coach Partha Chakraborty. The Kolkata club is currently languishing at the fourth spot in Group B of I-League 2nd Division.
The heart of the matter
A lot was expected of Fikru, who had won the cash-rich ISL twice in his career. However, he played only four of Mohammedan's eight matches this season. While he has been unable to score in any of these four games, Fikru has also managed to pick up a couple of yellow cards.
Dissatisfied with his performances this season, Fikru has been sent a show-cause notice by the officials at Mohammedan Sporting, the club confirmed to Sportskeeda. Additionally, the club officials are set to meet with Fikru on Saturday, in order to discuss the issue at hand.
What's next?
Fikru finds himself in a rather tight spot after being show-caused by the club. It all depends on how his talks with the club officials go. The club may end up imposing a fine or a sanction on him, of the Ethiopian striker is unable to convince the officials.
Author's take
Fikru has mesmerised football fans in India with his goalscoring abilities in the past, winning two ISL titles. While he may be going through a lean patch right now, the 32-year-old will have to find his scoring boots again, in order to keep himself at the club.
