Mohammedan Sporting replace Willis Plaza with Fikru Teferra ahead of 2nd Division I-League
Trinidadian striker Willis Plaza, who made a move to Mohammedan Sporting Club earlier last month has now officially parted ways with the club and is set to be replaced by Ethiopian forward Fikru Teferra for the rest of the I-League season.
Having signed for Mohamedan in early February this year, the move to replace Plaza with Fikru was confirmed to Sportskeeda by the club.
Plaza, 30, made his senior appearance for Trinidad and Tobago in 2012 and in 23 appearances so far, the striker has netted the ball seven times. Teferra, on the other hand, is a much more experienced campaigner having represented his country in 30 games since his debut in 2004.
On the back of Plaza's release, Fikru's services were acquired by Mohammaden Sporting Club with whom he signed a contract in February and was scheduled to play his first game for them in the I-League season starting later this month.
"Plaza was given an advance salary on the day he joined. However, he got a mail that demanded him to fly back to his country in the middle of the I-League season which would affect our campaign. Since we did not want his absence to influence our campaign, we decided to replace Plaza with Teffera," said Mohammedan Sporting general secretary Ghazal Zafar.
Fikru Teferra, ATK's superstar
Teferra, famously known for scoring the Indian Super League's first ever goal, has acres of experience under his belt having represented various clubs right through his football career.
The Ethiopian represented inaugural ISL winners Atletico de Kolkata in 2014, scoring five goals in 12 appearances which put him in the spotlight. However, the next year, he shifted to Chennaiyin FC and made 11 appearances, winning the title with them as well.
Come the I-League season, it will be interesting to see how much of an influence the Ethiopian forward has on the team's success.
