I-League: Pune FC set to sign former Portsmouth youth player Calum Angus

Pune FC are set to sign English central defender Calum Angus, who had a spell at Portsmouth as a youngster and last played for Swedish club GAIS. The news has been confirmed by Swedish publications Goteborgs-Posten (GP) and Expressen.

Born in Greenwich, England, Angus is a 27-year-old defender, who was released by Portsmouth in 2004. He then moved to USA and had a successful college career there but failed to get a contract in the MLS.

He had a brief spell at Wilmington Hammerheads, a third-tier team of USA, before joining GAIS in 2009. Angus played three seasons in the Swedish top flight but GAIS were relegated last term.

Confirming his imminent move to Pune FC, Angus was quoted saying by the Expressen, “I am excited by the move. It is sad to leave GAIS. It was a very difficult decision, but it will be an adventure in India. I have heard that the quality of football is good there.”

Pune FC, who finished runners-up in last season’s I-League, are expected to make the deal official in the next few days. Angus will be the direct replacement for Nigerian center back Chika Wali, who has moved to Salgaocar.
