I-League Stats: Which team has lost most points from winning positions?
Nowadays, it is very easy for football fans to know different kinds of statistics about the international and club competitions around the world. But Sportskeeda brings you a special two-part series to bring out some interesting numbers from our very own I-League.
In part one, we reveal the team(s) that have lost the most points from winning position.
Note: Statistics doesn’t include Mohun Bagan’s first ten games and today’s Pune FC vs East Bengal clash.
Salgaocar 10
Air India 10
Prayag United 9
Sporting Clube 9
United Sikkim 8
Mumbai FC 8
ONGC 4
Shillong Lajong 3
Pailan Arrows 3
East Bengal 2
Pune FC 2
Dempo 0
Churchill Brothers 0
From the order above, its clear why Salgaocar and Air India are fighting to avoid relegation. Both have 14 points each and are just three points above the drop zone, although Air India have played two matches less.
But they would be in a much better position had they not lost ten points from winning positions, with Air India throwing away leads in as many as five separate matches.
Sporting Clube and United Sikkim are two other relegation candidates who have suffered because of their inability to hold on to leads while high spenders Prayag United would probably have been in the title race had they not dropped those nine points.
It’s no surprise to see that the four teams who have dropped the least points from winning positions are the title contenders, with league leaders Churchill Brothers and defending champions Dempo not dropping any points at all.
What about Mohun Bagan?
We left out Mohun Bagan from the analysis as they basically had to restart their campaign from game 11. But just for the record, the green-and-maroon brigade lost five points from winning positions in their first ten games.
