"If they lose, I might put something online" - Neal Maupay on who he will support during England vs Switzerland Euro 2024 quarter-final
Everton striker Neal Maupay joked that he would post something online should England lose to Switzerland in their Euro 2024 quarter-final clash on Saturday, July 6. The Frenchman had earlier trolled the Three Lions following their 1-1 draw against Denmark on June 19, Wednesday.
Gareth Southgate's men reached the quarter-final of the European championship after beating Slovakia 2-1 in the Round of 16. They had earlier finished on the top of Group C with five points.
However, the victory against Slovakia didn't come easy. The Euro 2020 runners-up conceded first in the 25th minute after Ivan Schranz slotted one home.
The Three Lions came back into the game through Jude Bellingham's 95th-minute miraculous bicycle kick. They won the game through Harry Kane's header in first-half extra time.
Maupay, who had earlier mocked the Three Lions following their 1-1 draw against Denmark, said he was supporting Southgate's men in their quarter-final game against Switzerland, who defeated defending champions Italy in the Round of 16.
Here's what he said (via Sky Sports):
"I will be supporting England of course but if they lose I might put something online, who knows?"
What had Maupay said after England's 1-1 draw against Denmark?
The Three Lions had opened the scoring against the Danes in the 18th minute through Harry Kane. However, a screamer by Morten Hjulmand in the 34th minute nullified their lead and put the runners-up of Euro 2020 on edge for the remainder of the game.
Mocking Southgate's squad following their draw, Maupay shared a laughing meme along with the caption "It’s coming home."
Furthermore, the 27-year-old had mocked the Three Lions even before Euro 2024 began. He said he had a cache of memes ready should England face France in the tournament. Here's what he said (via GOAL):
"I’ve got a few memes ready. I’ve seen that we (France) can face each other in the semi-finals. It depends on where I watch the game. It will be in England, but I’ll have to be careful. I don’t want to be run down by 20 fans! I’ll wait until I get home and then will be on my phone."
Notably, France reached the semi-final of Euro 2024 after defeating Portugal 5-3 on penalties. They will take on Spain, who reached the semi-final after defeating Germany 2-1.
