What's the story?

Spaniard Ferran Corominas created history on Sunday when he scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season and became the highest goal-scorer in a single ISL season. These strikes against FC Pune City took him past ex-Chennaiyin FC player Stiven Mendoza, who had netted 13 times during his team's title-winning campaign in 2015.

In case you didn't know...

Corominas has been the find of this ISL edition as he has been totally dominant in the attacking third all throughout the season, troubling the defence of almost all clubs.

The Spaniard who has spent most part of his football career at Espanyol was signed by FC Goa after his stint with Cypriot club Doxa Katokopias FC was over and he made an immediate impact.

The heart of the matter

Goa were win-less in their last five matches and their best player who was also in the midst of some indifferent form rose to the occasion to not only create an individual feat but also help his team keep their playoff hopes alive.

Coro collected the ball on the right in the 59th minute and darted into the box to score past Vishal Kaith to break the record and then in the 66th minute he calmly slotted home a penalty to stamp his authority on the game.

Goa were thoroughly dominant throughout the game and Pune were left with no option but to sit and defend. There were hardly any shots on target for the hosts as Goa wrapped up the game 4-0.

What's next?

FC Goa moved to sixth position on the table with 24 points from 16 games. They still have to win both their remaining games to qualify for the semifinals. Corominas' scoring boots have started talking which holds his team in good stead to progress further in this tournament.

Author's next

Corominas was stuck on 13 goals for quite a while but it was a matter of time that he would break Mendoza's record. This will give the star striker extra motivation to push himself to greater heights at the business end of the season.
