ISL 2017/18: Teddy Sheringham sacked by ATK, Ashley Westwood to take over
Defending ISL champions ATK have sacked their manager Teddy Sheringham, after the club went through a string of poor performances in the ongoing season. The club has also announced that director of football Ashley Westwood will take over as the interim coach for now.
ATK are the most successful club in the short history of the Indian Super League, having won the tournament twice in three seasons. However, their fourth season in ISL has not been as fruitful, with the club currently languishing at the eighth spot in the table, with just three wins under their belt from 10 games.
ATK's poor performances have set the alarm bells ringing, and the club has finally decided to part ways with their manager, who had previously played for Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
"ATK today announced a change in their coaching set-up. ATK Team management would like to thank Teddy Sheringham for his services towards Hero ISL Season 4," said ATK in a statement. "We wish him all the very best for his future endeavours. Ashley Westwood, will be the interim head coach."
Sportskeeda had previously reported that the ATK management was not too happy with Sheringham, who has not been able to inspire the same form that saw the Red and Whites win two titles.
Furthermore, Sheringham is said to have fallen out with Westwood, who has a proven track record in India, having won the I-League twice with Bengaluru FC, and rumours of a takeover from the former BFC boss had been circulating for some time.
ATK have been struggling this season, having garnered just 12 points from 10 games so far. With just eight more matches to go, their chances of making it to the .four playoff spots seem to be diminishing every week. They will begin their new era under Westwood on Thursday when they take on Chennaiyin FC at home.
