ISL 2017/18: Wellington Priori's moment of brilliance brings Jamshedpur FC closer to the knockout stages; watch video
On Saturday, Jamshedpur FC beat NorthEast United 1-0 in an ISL fixture at the JRD Tata Stadium with the help of a magical goal from Wellington Priori.
The first half was a snooze-fest with NorthEast United keeping about 70% of the possession, creating only 2-3 clear chances which they wasted. The home side was ineffective in the whole of the first half. Their manager, Steve Coppell brought on Mehtab Hossain to replace Ashim Biswas and that had an instant impact on the team.
Six minutes into the second half, Izu Azuka surprisingly went to take a throw-in which the home side had won. Azuka's long throw found the midfielder Wellington Priori in the box.
The 27-year-old took a touch and then, with an acrobatic effort, he beat the opposition goalkeeper and find the back of the net. With his first touch, Priori set up the ball just where he wanted, and then, he produced an incredible bicycle kick towards the goal.
The Brazilian's moment of brilliance came in a match in which his all-round performance was top-notch. He put in some decent defensive work throughout the match, created a few chances and produced a superb solo goal when it mattered the most.
This was only his second goal of the season in his seventh start but it was, by far, the most significant goal Jamshedpur have scored the entire season.
Jamshedpur FC are now in the third place with 25 points in 15 matches. Chennaiyin FC, who are occupying the fourth place for the time being, have a match in hand on the Steels and will face Delhi Dynamos on Sunday. FC Goa, also, have two matches in hand and are five points behind the Steels. The Goa-based side will play Chennaiyin FC and Delhi Dynamos in their next two matches.
