What's the Story

Ahead of their clash against the Kerala Blasters, ATK manager Teddy Sheringham admitted that it would be a dangerous prospect to face Kerala Blasters' new signing Dimitar Berbatov.

In a pre-match press conference in Kochi, Sheringham said, "I know a lot about Berbatov. He’s a wonderful player. But I do not want to enjoy watching him tomorrow.

In Case You Didn't Know

The Bulgarian was signed by Kerala Blasters on a one-year contract for ?7.5 crores. Prior to this, he had been without a club for a full year.

The Heart of the Matter

Dimitar Berbatov has been a prolific striker for top English clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the past, and although he is past his prime, his goalscoring abilities could do Kerala Blasters a world of good.

On the flip side, ATK's marquee striker, also a former Tottenham legend Robbie Keane has been ruled out of the match due to an Achilles injury. India national team striker Robin Singh is set to lead the line against Kerala Blasters.

"Robin Singh is a big strong boy and I am happy to have him in my squad," said Sheringham.

The former Manchester United man also went on to praise the Kerala Blasters fans. He said, "It’s mouthwatering to come here and play in front of these fans. Of course they won’t be supporting us. But it’s exciting regardless."

What Next?

The ISL kicks off tomorrow evening with Kerala and Kolkata starting the proceedings. These two teams have a long history between them in the past three seasons. They have made it to the finals twice, but lost out on both occasions to ATK.

Sportskeeda's Take

Sheringham is right about one thing, Berbatov is certainly the danger man. Is Dimitar Berbatov the missing piece of the puzzle for Kerala Blasters to finally lift that trophy? Only time can tell.
