ISL 2017: Dimitar Berbatov reveals real reason behind Kerala Blasters move
What's the story?
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov caused quite a stir last month when he was announced as a Kerala Blasters player. The Bulgarian has opened up on why he chose to come down to India for what will probably be the final hurrah of his playing career, citing the influence of head coach Rene Meulensteen and the Blasters' desire to secure his signature.
"The big factor was the coach. We spoke on the phone, and he explained that he would like to work with me again. Knowing how he sees football, it was not a difficult decision to make. Of course, the club was showing they want me very much, always speaking with my agent, treating us with respect, and this was enough to convince me that I need to take this challenge in this new league!" Berbatov said to Goal India.
In case you didn't know...
Berbatov became Kerala Blasters' record signing when he put pen to paper on a season-long deal with the two-time Indian Super League finalists. The 36-year-old will reportedly earn around ?7.5 crores for his time with the Men in Yellow.
The heart of the matter
Berbatov and Meulensteen have worked together in the past at Manchester United and Fulham and their relationship was key in the player signing on the dotted lines.
"It's the third time we are going to work together, he knows me very well, he knows how I like to play football, what I need in training to feel good and to be in the best shape for my years. We won some trophies together so let's hope we can bring one to Kerala as well!" the player added.
With Kerala Blasters having found it impossible to cross the final hurdle in the previous seasons, Berbatov's words would be music to the Blasters' fans ears. He also has a terrific winning pedigree hence one wouldn't bet against Kerala Blasters going the distance in the 2017-18 ISL.
What's next?
The 2017-18 ISL kicks off on 17th November and Berbatov and co will be expected to hit the ground running from the off. With two more teams added to the roster of franchises, Kerala Blasters will have it extra tough to repeat their runs to the final in 2014 and 2016.
Author's take
Berbatov, 36, could have chosen a different option but learning the tricks of the coaching trade under one of the best in Meulensteen must have been an option the Bulgarian legend couldn't refuse.
