ISL 2017: "I would never close any doors to the ISL," says former ATK star Luis Garcia
What's the story?
Ex-Liverpool superstar Luis Garcia, who was part of Liverpool's Champions Trophy triumph in 2005, has opined that he would definitely consider jumping out of retirement to take part in the ISL in the near future if called for, considering the meteoric rise of the league since its inception in 2014.
"Though I didn't go back to the Indian Super League for a second year, as I wasn't too sure then if the league would be as good as the first edition," Garcia told Mid Day. He added, "Since then I have heard a lot of positive feedback about ISL 2. I don't think I will ever close any doors or rule out a return to the ISL in future."
In case you didn't know
With acres of experience under his belt, the Spaniard was signed up by Atletico de Kolkata as their captain and marquee player for the inaugural season.
The heart of the matter
Such was the midfielder's impact in the first season that the Spaniard won the 'Most Exciting Player of the Season' award for his attacking play in the 13 games he played and was also a vital contributor to ATK's title victory that season.
Now, three years down the line, Garcia has opened up opportunities for his return back to the ISL, citing that he would definitely consider making a comeback if he was offered a good contract and also elucidated how utterly impressed he was with the league's development over the years.
What's next?
While Garcia opted out of ISL 2015 owing to some injuries, a return to the ISL could definitely be on the cards as the 39-year-old's experience could come in handy for the franchises and would also be a major boost to the league's growing status.
Author's take
With stars such as Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Wes Brown featuring in the ISL this season, Garcia's addition would have been quite a welcome one this season. Here's hoping we see him in action soon once again!
