Following his arrival in Mumbai on Monday, FC Goa’s marquee signing Robert Pires was officially presented to the media in Mumbai on Tuesday. Speaking to the media, the Arsenal legend explained why he chose to sign for the ISL and how Arsene Wenger encouraged him.

Here are the excerpts

What are your first impressions on India?

It was amazing, the warm welcome I received at the Mumbai airport yesterday. I’m so happy to be here. I didn’t expect it. So thank you very much for the welcome.
India is a wonderful country. The food’s spicy, but I can’t wait to see the country and play good football.

How did the tie-up with ISL happen considering that you haven’t played since retirement?

Yes. I haven’t played for a few years now. I've retired for the last three years. My passion is football and I can still play, so I decided to come back to playing football. . If you have the passion, you need to play.  I was training with Arsenal because I have a good relationship there especially with Arsene Wenger. So it's been easy to come out of retirement. I’m ready for a new competition. I’m excited about the ISL and happy to be here in India. I’m sure it will be a success.

Did you speak to Wenger about coming to India?

Yes. Of course. He is important to me. When I explained the concept to him he said, “Robert, go. If you are confident to play don’t wait. You need to go.” I said. “Thank you boss.” To get a go-ahead from Wenger was really great for me because he is like my second father. That was all I needed to make up my mind

The weather conditions in India are difficult. Its hot and humid. How will you cope?

Yes. The weather is not the same as UK or in Spain. We know that it’s hot. But I’m ready. I’ve been training hard. There is a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. A lot of pressure. But I like the pressure. Tomorrow I will meet team mates and we will start training together.
