ISL: Chennaiyin FC's Elano relishing Atletico de Kolkata clash so early in the season
The second season of the Hero Indian Super League returns with a bang as Champions Atletico de Kolkata lock horns with one of their strongest challengers Chennaiyin FC in Chennai later today. The clash sees the top two teams from last year’s league stage go head-to-head in what promises to be a cracking opening encounter.
There nothing to choose between the two sides when they met last season as both the encounters ended in tame draws. With both the teams having strengthened over the year and wanting to give nothing away in the season opener, it will require something special from the superstars out there if the clash is to be settled today.
In Elano, Chennaiyin have a potent weapon – one which could tilt the game in their favor. Having netted eight goals in nine appearances for the Chennai outfit, Elano’s season was abruptly interrupted due to an injury.
But back fit and with fresh vigour, Elano is looking forward to the clash with Champions Atletico de Kolkata and can’t wait to get on the pitch.
Speaking at the ISL Media Day in Mumbai, Elano said, “I can’t wait to get started. We have had a good training camp in Italy and the first game against Atletico de Kolkata is a massive one for us. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Good to play champions so early in the season: Elano
Many pundits believed that Chennaiyin couldn’t have wished for a tougher start to their season than a trip to the home of the champions, but Elano thinks differently and feels it’s the best possible game to play first up.
“I feel it couldn’t have been better timed. I have played for champion teams and it’s not easy to play your first game as champions. The pressure is on you and it becomes difficult,” Elano added.
The master of free kicks who earned the title of ‘Free Kick God’ from the Chennai faithful, felt the game against last year’s winners will get the best out of his side and a win there could provide them with a great platform for the rest of the season.
“I feel it’s good to play them so early. We know we will have to be at our best to get a good result and that will help us bring our best game to the table. It’s always important to play good football and against Atletico, we will have to,” said the former Manchester City midfielder.
With Elano in their ranks, Chennaiyin will be feeling they could set an early season marker by beating the champions in their own backyard. It will be easier said than done, but if Elano can weave his magic, the Marina Arena will be buzzing by the end of the ninety minutes.
