John Terry praises Jose Mourinho, says "This is where he comes into his own"
Chelsea captain John Terry believes it was vital that his side showed the whole of the Premier League that Manchester City can be beaten on their home turf, after a 1-0 victory for the West Londoners ended Manuel Pellegrini’s unblemished home record this season.
Branislav Ivanovic’s sensational first half strike was enough to claim all three points at the Etihad, as Chelsea drew level on points with City and now sit just two points behind league leaders Arsenal.
City failed to score on their home patch for the first time this season and skipper Terry is adamant the result has not only put Jose Mourinho’s men firmly in the title race, but will provide confidence to the rest of the division too.
“They’ve been phenomenal scoring goals and turning teams over. It was important not just for us but for other teams, showing that they can be beaten,” Terry told Sky Sports.
Many had predicted Mourinho would park the proverbial bus, but the Portuguese’s tactics were faultless, with the flourishing partnership of Terry and Gary Cahill providing the foundations to build on and contain City’s previously free scoring attack.
Former England defender Terry was quick to heap praise on his boss, declaring the result was down to his tactical masterclass.
“Very much so. This is where he comes into his own.We spent a couple of days working on their strengths and weaknesses.
“After the disappointment of dropping two points against West Ham, it was important to come here and bounce back. In the first 15 minutes, they were very good and made it difficult. We showed a lot of character. Overall, we were very solid and happy for the win,” he declared.
Despite Mourinho insisting that his team are not contenders for the Premier League crown, the Blues have sent out a huge statement by dispatching Manchester City with such ruthless efficiency.
