Jose Mourinho rules out Chelsea move for Inter Milan legend Javier Zanetti
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has ruled out an approach for Internazionale legend Javier Zanetti, reports TalkSport.
The 40-year-old enjoyed an excellent relationship with the Portuguese boss during his spell in Milan and the pair won the treble together in 2010 before Mourinho departed for Real Madrid.
The duo have been linked with a reunion in west London in recent weeks but Mourinho, speaking after his side’s 1-1 draw draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League last 16, is adamant he did not make an offer for Zanetti’s services in January.
“There was no offer for Zanetti. It is impossible to see [him] with another team that is not Inter,” he said.
The versatile Argentine has made over 600 appearances for the Serie A side and is rumoured to be interested in playing outside of Italy before his retirement with the Premier League a likely destination.
Mourinho’s squad would benefit from the addition of Zanetti due to his wealth of experience and knowledge that he could pass on to the youngster’s progressing through the ranks at Stamford Bridge.
However, the ageing player is keen on a coaching or management role when he retires and Zanetti’s future appears to lie with Inter Milan, who are reportedly close to signing Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic. He is regarded as a Nerazzurri legend and would surely be welcomed with open arms if his chooses to continue his career once his playing days are over.
Javier Zanetti has made just five league appearances for Internazionale, in what could prove to be his last season at the club.
