Jose Mourinho: "Paul Lambert reminds me of myself 10 years ago"
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho told his Aston Villa counterpart, Paul Lambert to stop complaining after Chelsea narrowly beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea won their second match in succession in the Premier League thanks to Branislav Ivanovic’s 73rd minute headed goal, but Lambert thought that the defender should have been sent off earlier for elbowing Christian Benteke.
Lambert also felt aggrieved that his Aston Villa side were not awarded an injury-time penalty when John Terry handled Gabriel Agbonlahor’s header in the Chelsea box.
Mourinho and Lambert clashed on the touchline throughout the match as they disputed referee Kevin Friend’s performance.
Mourinho said: “He is a certain type of personality.
“He reminds me of myself 10 years ago when I was proclaiming every decision.
“I wanted to coach my team and have the whistle.
“He complains about every decision but he’s a young manager.”
Mourinho defended the referee’s performance and suggested Aston Villa only know how to play long ball football.
Paul Lambert dismissed Mourinho’s comments and insisted the referee’s decisions had a large say in the outcome of the match.
The Scot fumed: “We have been done by two big decisions.
“It was handball – Agbonlahor has won the header.
“You can’t have your hands raised in the penalty box.
“Decisions like that, I don’t think you can miss them.”
Asked about his touchline clash, Lambert added: “Jose doesn’t stand there like a shrinking violet.”
Lambert also spoke of his pride at his side’s fine display saying: “I don’t think we deserved to lose.”
