What's the story?

Jose Mourinho has recently been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur manager following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

When asked in a press conference whether his stint at Tottenham Hotspur will be his last in England, Mourinho replied in the affirmative, stating that he would "love that to be the case".

In case you didn't know

Tottenham will be Jose Mourinho's third Premier League club's managed in his already illustrious managerial career, having had two stints at Chelsea, as well as one at Manchester United.

Additionally, Mourinho has managed some of the greatest clubs in Europe, including the likes of Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

The heart of the matter

As aforementioned, Mourinho confirmed that he hopes Tottenham Hotspur will be the last club that he manages in England. The Portuguese stated,

"I would love to stay for many years. I say many years but I know realistically how football is. If I could do a Mauricio for five-and-a-half years, it would be amazing. I would be 61 - then 10 more years. Vitoria Setubal in Portugal may be the last job.”

Through an extension of the initial quote, we can see the true meaning behind Mourinho's comments. In his mid-50s the Portuguese manager is beginning to think about the latter stages of his managerial career.

Should he be successful at Tottenham then it would stand to reason that he will stay at the club for many years to come and of course, his intention as the new manager is to be exactly that.

Tottenham Hotspur failed to win any silverware under Pochettino, despite boasting one of the strongest sides in Europe. Their closest chance was reaching the UEFA Champions League final last season, ultimately losing to Liverpool in an unceremonious 1-0 defeat.

Mourinho is no stranger to success and has been extremely successful at every club he has managed, including Manchester United, where he was able to win the UEFA Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield, despite the club experiencing deep issues.

Tottenham will be yearning for the Portuguese manager to bring his Midas touch to North London to help the club win trophies before their key players start becoming tempted to move elsewhere.

What's next?

Tottenham Hotspur face off against London rivals West Ham this Saturday at 12:30 GMT.
