Kondwani Mtonga retained by NorthEast United for second season of Indian Super League
NorthEast United have retained Zambian international footballer Kondwani Mtonga for the second edition of the Indian Super League. Mtonga became the second foreign player to be retained by NorthEast United after Portuguese Miguel Garcia was retained a few days back.
Mtonga, 31, started his career at Zambian club Zamtel Ndola in 2007 and later went on to join Zesco United, who play in the Zambian Premier League. At Zesco United, Mtonga won two league titles in three years following which European clubs came calling. He was almost signed by Ligue 1 side Sochaux but eventually found himself playing for Shillong Lajong in the I-League.
In the first season of the ISL, he stayed in the North East and as he was signed up by NorthEast United. He scored two goals in the inaugural season of the ISL with the first one coming in a 2-0 win over FC Mumbai City while the other came in a losing cause as he scored a consolation goal against Delhi Dynamos with the full-time score reading 1-2.
