La Liga: Espanyol humiliated 5-0 by Real Sociedad at home
Spanish football club Espanyol suffered an embarrassing 0-5 home defeat here by Real Sociedad, who picked up their first away win in La Liga since Eusebio Sacristan replaced David Moyes as coach in November.
The Catalan club never recovered after falling behind 0-2 in the first seven minutes on Monday. Jonathas scored for Real in the fifth minute on a brilliant long ball from Vela, who got the second goal for the visitors just two minutes later, reports Efe.
Espanyol made a goalkeeping change in the second half
Apparently seeking to startle his team into action, Espanyol coach Constantin Galca opted to make a goalkeeping change at the start of the second half, replacing Arlauskis with Pau Lopez.
The gambit fell flat as Lopez gave up two goals in the space of four minutes to Oyarzabal and Diego Reyes, respectively, leaving the home team down 0-4 in the 55th minute.
Jonathas got his second of the night in the final minute of regulation time to bring the score to 5-0.
With the victory, Real Sociedad leapfrogged Getafe to claim 11th place in La Liga on 27 points from 23 matches. Espanyol sit in 17th place with 22 points, just one above the relegation zone.
