La Liga: Stats, records set and milestones achieved in the 2015/16 season
Barcelona held on to make it five wins in the last five games to clinch the La Liga title on the final day of the season. With Real Madrid breathing down their neck following a collapse that saw the Catalan club win just a point from an available 12 points between March and April, Luis Enrique’s men defended their title with a one-point lead in the final standings.
Along the way, the trio of MSN set various records with Luis Suarez leading the way. The Uruguayan striker has made the Camp Nou his home and has won two league titles in the two seasons he has spent in Spain.
Barcelona also set a few records and milestones themselves. Here’s a look at some of the most notable achievements at the end of the season.
Luis Suarez wins the Pichichi
40 – The 29-year-old striker became only the third player to score 40 goals in a single season in La Liga and took home the Pichichi in the process. The other two? Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, of course.
Both the ballon d’Or winners have achieved that feat three times in their career (Messi – 2011/12, 2012/13 & 2014/15; Ronaldo – 2010/11, 2011/12, 2014/15).
6 – The former Liverpool man grabbed six hat-tricks this season. Nobody else in Europe has more than 3. They came against Eibar, Athletic Bilbao, Celta Vigo, Deportivo, Sporting Gijon and Granada.
14 – With the league entering the crucial home stretch, Suarez scored an incredible 14 goals in the last five matches.
16 – With 16 assists, Suarez also topped the La Liga assists charts alongside his Barca teammate Messi.
