Leicester City left-back Christian Fuchs wants to be an NFL kicker
Most footballers look to get into coaching or the media after retirement from the game. Not Leicester City’s full-back Christian Fuchs though. He has plans to continue playing, albeit a different sport altogether – playing American Football in the National Football League in the USA.
After signing for the Foxes from Schalke on a free transfer in the 2015 summer transfer window, Fuchs has been integral to the club’s dream run that has seen them top the Premier League table and extend their lead at the top to seven points with six games to go. A year ago, the Foxes were dead last and were staring relegation in the face. Now, Claudio Ranieri’s side look favourites to become only the sixth team to lift the Premier League title.
And the 29-year-old Austrian defender actually has dreams of playing as a kicker in the NFL.
“I have ambitions to become an NFL kicker,” he told Sky Sports in an interview. “Seriously. Depending on the managers in the NFL. If they want a footballer in their team but I am very much up for it.”
The kicker is a specialised role in American Football. Teams looking to score a field goal from a spot far down the field bring on the kicker who tries to score by kicking the ball between the posts.
“I know I can kick 60 yards or so or 65 yards field goal,” Fuchs explained.
“Let’s see. Dreams can come true you know if you don’t dream you won’t reach anything.”
Fuchs plans to move to the United States after retirement
Fuchs’s family lives in Manhattan and his wife, a former senior analyst at Goldman Sachs, heads the football academy he founded in New York – the Fox Soccer Academy.
“I have a family in New York,” Fuchs continued. “I have a wife and two kids.
“It’s not as easy having a family that is here all of the time because I am person who needs the family around and I am a family guy. It’s pretty tough.
“I’m already thinking about what’s after my career. I will be in America and I will move to be with my family. I simply want to do something. I can’t just be laying on the couch because that’s so not me.”
